About

About Energy Creates

A national scholarship program that puts the future of Canadian energy in the hands of the next generation of artists, filmmakers, writers, and designers.

Mission

Built to start a conversation.

Founded in 2024, Energy Creates is a national platform that empowers young Canadians to explore and express their perspectives on the national and global impact of Canada’s energy sector through creativity, innovation, and critical thinking.

Through scholarships, contests, and educational tools, the initiative fosters balanced, fact-based dialogue. The conversation has to include Canada’s current energy mix as it actually is: conventional resources like oil and gas, transitional fuels, and renewables.

Energy Creates champions environmental responsibility, meaningful consultation with Indigenous communities, and real-world solutions that reflect the complexity of today’s energy landscape. It promotes open discussion about how energy development drives economic growth, addresses energy poverty, and positions Canada as a responsible global leader.

The founder

Mathew Embry.

Mathew Embry is a filmmaker, advocate, and entrepreneur who founded Energy Creates to give young Canadians a platform to share bold, balanced ideas about the future of energy.

As the founder of Musterpoint Productions, he has directed award-winning social justice films on topics including the opioid crisis, concussions, cyberbullying, and energy poverty, often collaborating with A-list talent and leading experts to elevate urgent, underrepresented issues.

Mathew is also the founder of MS Hope, a globally recognized resource offering free, evidence-based strategies for the MS community, which he founded after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1995. A father of two, Mathew believes in living life to the fullest and using storytelling, education, and innovation to build a better, more honest world for the next generation.

The judges

Judged by Canadians who know the work.

Submissions are judged anonymously by a panel of expert jurors drawn from film, art, education, and the Canadian energy sector. The jurors review every shortlisted entry blind, then score finalists on an eight-criterion rubric covering originality, craft, theme, and impact.

The full panel for the current cycle is announced ahead of the submission deadline. Past jurors have included filmmakers, working artists, educators, and energy-sector leaders.

Funding

Independent by design.

Energy Creates is made possible through generous personal and corporate donations. The organization believes in upholding artistic integrity and transparency where it matters most: the message.

Founder Mathew Embry maintains final cut on every Energy Creates documentary production, ensuring the storytelling stays independent, honest, and aligned with the platform’s values.
