Energy Creates launched with $500,000 in no-strings-attached scholarships for Canadian youth aged 15 to 25. The fund grew from an initial $100,000 target after corporate, nonprofit, and individual donors stepped in.
The contest is the work of Mathew Embry, an internationally recognized, award-winning documentary filmmaker whose credits include Living Proof and Painkiller: Inside the Opioid Crisis, and a father of two teenagers. It is built around his documentary Global Warning, which looks at the Canadian energy sector across economics, energy security, Indigenous rights, environmental stewardship, and the climate conversation.
To enter, students watch the film, complete a quiz, and submit a creative work such as a short film, song, essay, or visual piece. Embry has said the artistic-challenge approach is "highly effective in fostering understanding and critical thinking about significant issues."
